Well first of all, I played in that BlizzPro tournament at SoPro gaming in Overland Park, KS over the past weekend. I got knocked out first round, but felt better when I learned that the guy who beat me went on to win the whole thing! So congrats to Runetail, for sure. I did take him to five games though, two of which were still very close. I told my fiancee this, and she said, “Well, you might not suck.” She’s always so comforting! Anyway, the venue was pretty jazzed I was with BlizzPro in some capacity, and the warm welcome was an awesome feeling.
Onto the real news though…the new wing of League of Explorers comes out today. And with it come again some very interesting cards. Of these, I’m really excited about Keeper of Uldaman, and of course Brann Bronzebeard.
Keeper of Uldaman is a 3/4 for 4 mana Paladin card with a Battlecry that reads: “Set a minion’s Attack and Health to 3”. So it’s like a different kind of Aldor Peacekeeper in a way, but there’s more to it than that. I hadn’t thought of its full potential until I listened to this week’s Well Met Podcast. They discussed how the card can be used both offensively and defensively, as you can nerf an opponent’s threat down to a 3/3 (which this card could easily trade with itself), OR you can buff your own minion up to 3/3. Perhaps one of the Silver Hand Recruits? That’s sure to see some use.
And then we’ve got Brann Bronzebeard. 2/4 for 3 mana LEGENDARY minion, which simply says “Your Battlecries trigger twice”. As it’s not out yet, my research on the way this works is inconclusive. But we do know from the Blizzard devs that targetable damaging Battlecries will go off twice on whatever you target. Think Fire Elemental or Blackwing Corruptor. Of course at 3 mana, you can have a turn ten Brann Bronzebeard into Dr. Boom and have four Boom Bots as another example of the power behind this card. But I’m mostly excited about how it can impact Shaman–look at its class card selection and think through how powerful it could be to double up on some of those Battlecries.
The one thing I want to test out about Brann Bronzebeard is how it would work with Mind Control Tech. If your opponent has four minions on the board, does it cause this Battlecry to proc twice? Or would they need five minions for it to count both times? It comes down to whether Brann procs the full double effect by itself, or if it’s hindered by conditional Battlecries like this. One thing I don’t doubt though is that some Battlecries are better than others of course. Take our buddy Keeper of Uldaman from the above paragraph…presumably his would turn your targeted minion into a 3/3. Twice.
Anyway get in there and let me know what you guys think and have come across. Also, Reno Jackson is proving to be really dang powerful, so keep your eyes out when playing against a deck that doesn’t seem to run a ton of duplicates, or aims for late game.
