I’m guessing you didn’t hear about this week’s news here first, and that’s fine! If for some reason you have no idea what I’m talking about in this article, please read this first, and then come back for my thoughts.
Here’s your TL;DR version: When the next expansion comes out, two new modes will come with it. These are Wild and Standard. In Wild, you can play with any deck in the Hearthstone collection as normal. Standard, however, will be the new “Standard” for competitive Hearthstone…OMG guise did you C wut I did thar? Oh wait, that may have been their thought process behind the new name. Anyway, in Standard you can only play with the Basic, Classic, and most recent two expansions and Adventures. This keeps the meta ever-changing and fresh for the eSports scene, and offers a better leg up for new players to get back into the game.
Also, 18 deck slots. That’s all I need to say about that.
What does this mean? Well, when the next expansion comes out…except purely for fun, there’s no reason to technically hold onto your Naxxramas and Goblins vs Gnomes cards. These will ONLY be playable in Wild. And Wild, though fun sounding, is intentionally the red headed step child of the Hearthstone scene. It’s just not going to matter. No offense to any ginger stepchildren out there reading this.
They’re making it to where you can disenchant ADVENTURE cards from old sets. Meaning you could feasibly take ol’ Loatheb, or Sludge Belcher and from GvG you could EVEN DISENCHANT FREAKING Dr. Boom and disenchant him the day this comes out. You could feasbily do this and feel no remorse at all, because to be competitive in the game, you would legitimately not need them anymore.
So if you really ARE looking to get a competitive edge next expansion, you could actually disenchant ALL of your Naxx and GvG cards. In fact it could be argued that this is a wise move. I foresee myself being one of those collector kids though, holding onto old sets to play in crazy Wild LAN tournaments down the road. So I don’t foresee myself parting with them.
I’d recommend reading over Hearthstone’s FAQ for additional answers. I Tweeted one question at them though, and got a response. Will there be new Legend card backs to commemorate hitting Legend in Wild and Standard? They said there are no plans to change the Legend card back at this time. Which is a blessing, in a way, but also it could be fun to grind out the different ladders someday.
I’ll post more speculation about this later, but I HAD to get this out there on the day they announced it. Look forward to me going NUTS on BlizzPro Weekly. Forget Overwatch…they didn’t even announce anything this week.
